The AA Preamble:

The preamble explains a little about what AA is and is not. We read this at the beginning of our meetings

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help other alcoholics to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking.

There are no dues or fees for AA membership. We are self-supporting through our own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, political organization, or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, and neither endorses nor opposes any causes. to launch a business.

Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

NOW YOU UNDERSTAND GROUP HISTORY

The Group wanted to have a name that echoed the location, NYU, but couldn’t indicate that the group was affiliated with the University directly. So, they used the initials, and came up with the name
“Now You Understand”

IN-PERSON MEETING INFO

AS OF JULY 1, 2024 - WE WILL MEET IN PERSON FIVE DAYS A WEEK!!!

Now You Understand will be conducting in-person meetings on Mondays at St John’s Lutheran Church at 83 Christopher Street. We will conduct meetings Tuesdays, through Fridays at Judson Memorial Church, 239 Thompson Street.

MEETINGS ARE AT 11 AM; 12:30 PM and 2 PM, Mondays

12:30 PM Tuesdays through Fridays

EACH MEETING IS A DIFFERENT FOCUS AND FORMAT

  • CELEBRATE

Our group celebrates sobriety anniversaries of 90 days or years on the last weekday of the month at the 12:30 meeting. Currently, the anniversary meetings are held virtually and are open to members and non- members (as observers). On those days, there will be no 11am or 2pm meeting. We also have our business meeting after the Anniversary Meeting. All are welcome. If you are celebrating this month, please email:

    anniversarynyu@gmail.com

  • SAFETY

NYU takes every member of our group’s safety seriously. Problems found in the world can also make their way into A.A. As we strive to share in a spirit of trust — both at meetings and individually with sponsors, friends and new acquaintances — it is reasonable for each member to expect a meaningful level of safety. NYU follows the General Services Offices (GSO) statement on safety. Please see:

    https://www.aa.org/assets/en_US/smf-209_en.pdf

To contact our safety steering committees please see Important Links your anonymity will be preserved

  • ANONYMITY

Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions ever reminding us to place principles before personalities, At the personal level, anonymity assures privacy for all members, a safeguard often of special significance to newcomers who may hesitate to seek help in A.A. if they have any reason to believe their alcoholism may be exposed publicly.

The Seventh Tradition states that Alcoholics Anonymous is self-supporting through our own contributions. The contributions help to cover the group’s expenses. But the Seventh Tradition is more than simply paying for rent and other group expenses. It is both a privilege and a responsibility of individual groups and members to ensure that our organization, at every level, remains forever self-supporting and free of outside influences that might divert us from our primary purpose. The monetary amount of each contribution is secondary to the spiritual connection that joins us in unity with A.A. groups around the world.

The Now You Understand Group meets 5 days a week, Monday through Friday.
